It's A Wonderful Life

Romans 5:1-11 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. [6] For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. [9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. [10] For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. [11] And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”

The first 3 chapters of Romans remind us of the sinful nature of man by revealing the depth of wickedness and depravity of the world in which we live.

Galatians 1:3-4 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, [4] Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Paul reveals God’s plan of salvation in Chapter 3-4.

Romans 5 begins a study of the life of the saved person. As we examine the remainder of this epistle, and become more aware of our position in Christ,     I believe it is Paul’s intention for you to experience a significant change in your attitude toward God! Knowing the Lord intimately will altar your life!

The Christian life should not be one of hypocrisy. It is to be…
·      A life of purpose.
·      A life of fellowship with God.
·      A life in which we are never meant to stop growing.
Notice two important phrases that appear in…
v 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have...
v 9 Much more then, being justified by His blood, we shall be...

This implies there are some important things that accompany our salvation.

1.     The Life of Faith is a Life of PEACE (v 1).  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

This Peace means – the war is over: God’s terms of pardon have been accepted; The arms of rebellion are to be laid down; Since Adam man has rebelled and run from God; We have warred against Him.

God has always sought to bring peace between Himself & His Creation…
·      Genesis 3:9 The LORD God called unto Adam,…
·      Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together saith the Lord…
·      Luke 19:10 the Son of man is come to seek and to save…
·      Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,…
·      Revelation 22:17 the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

It is a wonderful thing to be at peace with God!

The price of our peace was high (v 9). being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

2.     The Life of Faith is a Life of ACCESS (v 2a).  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand [firmly remain],..

Access means we have been brought in by faith [prosagōgē] “the act of bringing to, a moving to.” Thayer says, “that friendly relation with God whereby we are acceptable to Him and have assurance that He is favorably disposed towards us.” Christ has brought us Face to Face with God; He has achieved a complete and continuous access for us. He led us into the presence of God. The phrase wherein we stand = firmly remain [Strongs].

Ephesians 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

3.     The Life of Faith is a Life of HOPE (v 2b). By who also we...rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Ephesians 2:11-13 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:... But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

When we were in rebellion and at war with God we had no hope of winning. We were fighting the wrong foe; we were deceiving ourselves.

The Glory of God: Matthew 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  What a glorious Hope we have!!!!

4.     The Life of Faith is a Life of CONFIDENCE (v 3-5a). And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed;

Notice the process of growth into spiritual maturity. It is important that we have our spiritual eyes fixed on the glory of God!!

Being fixed on God’s Glory will keep us in times of tribulation. Tribulation brings Patience; Patience brings Experience; Experience brings Hope; Hope brings Confidence.

2 Corinthians 4:8-10 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

5.     The Life of Faith is a Life of LOVE (v 5-11). because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. [11] And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Question: Is It God’s love for us? or Our love for God?

The Proof of God’s Love (v 6-8).
·      God’s Love is Unconditional (without our merit) (v 6).
·      God’s Love is Incomparable (v 7-8).

The Provision of God’s Love.
·      By His Spirit (v 5).
·      By His Blood (v 9).
·      By His Death (v 10).
·      By His Life (v 11).
